I’m thrilled to have been asked by good friend, world-class athlete, nutritional expert, and Mother-extraordinaire Izzie Brown to contribute photographs to the just released BOAT HOUSE ROW COOKBOOK. Since Izzie is a Registered Dietician with a Masters in Exercise Science, this collection of more than 100 recipes is a must have for athletes of all flavors–and all the more for Philly natives, since the recipes come from our local rowers themselves. The recipes run the gamut, from hearty post workout breakfasts to light fare to help an athlete make weight, from vegan and veggie entrees to whole team affairs.

There’s far more than healthy food to this story: Izzie’s lifelong affair with Philly’s rowing scene resonates throughout her history of Boat House Row–as does her appreciation of one of her sport’s most beloved figures, Fred Duling. Duling, three time National Team member and winner of too many age group competitions to count, has been a fixture on Boathouse Row for decades. He has been friend, mentor, surrogate father, you name it, to hundreds of athletes over the years. Last Holiday Season, while decorating the Christmas tree at the Malta Boathouse for the umpteenth time, Fred took a tumble off a ladder. He was found unconscious, with multiple injuries–including 4 fractures in his Cervical Spine.

This inspiring piece about Fred by longtime Runners World Editor Amby Burfoot is included in the book and gives a sense of the man. Needless to say, Fred has a long hard road ahead, but his “bad-ass” spirit remains as strong as ever.

All proceeds from sales of the book go to support the Fred Duling Rehabilitation Fund. If you buy it now, here, $15 from the $22.95 cover price go directly to Fred.

Tasty, Nutritious Recipes. Local History. Assisting an Icon. What could be better than that?

Kona Ironman Preview = Adrenaline Rush

Triathlete or not, chances are you’ll get pumped by this preview of NBC’s coverage of the Ironmnan World Championships, which airs on Saturday at 4:30 EDT. If you were one of the lucky peeps who were there, I’d say it’s a pretty sure bet that watching this preview will get your adrenaline pumping and inspire you to hop on the trainer or throw down a few extra miles on your Sunday long run.

If you tune in and watch the full monty on Saturday, keep your eyes peeled for bright blue Team Snapple jerseys: there were five of us there, having fun in the sun!

It’s been an embarrassingly long time since I’ve added a post, but what the hey, it’s been a busy summer. What else can I say. No excuses, just fact. And apologies for the one or two of you who might actually care. At any rate, I’m back and promise to be more regular in the future.

Soon — very soon — I’ll start playing a bit of catch up, sharing recent happenings, and a journey or two. Later this fall, I’ll start adding some articles and pix from the archival vault. Promise. And who knows, somewhere along the line I might even scribe a few original thoughts…

In the meantime, this video recently came to my attention by way of the Opel Ampera TV Spot. Pretty cool that a down to Earth American ultramarathoner is gaining exposure in Europe and connecting our shared passions: testing one’s limits, caring for the environment, promoting ways that are healthy for people and planet — and are the result of hard work. Check out Scott Jurek — and then hunt down the television ad, which also features a mountain climber and free diver. Pretty inspiring stuff–and a huge Kudos to Scott!
